Czech Law for English-Speaking Clients

MACH LEGAL, advokátní kancelář s.r.o. is a Czech law firm based in Prague. We advise companies and private clients on Czech law directly in English, without a correspondence lawyer in between. For matters reaching into Germany or Slovakia, our partner is admitted in all three jurisdictions.

What we handle for English-speaking clients

Why foreign clients come to us

Most of our English-speaking clients come from another legal system, so the useful answer is rarely just what Czech law says. It is where Czech law differs from what you would expect. Three examples that come up constantly:

  • Title to property passes on registration in the Land Registry, not on signature — and there is no notary linking payment to transfer, which is why the price belongs in escrow.
  • A contractual penalty is enforceable even where no loss occurred.
  • A company whose beneficial owner is not correctly registered can lose the right to distribute profit to that owner and the owner’s voting rights.

Our partner Dr. Tomas Mach is an attorney-at-law registered with the Czech Bar Association (reg. no. 13282), the Slovak Bar Association (7581) and the Rechtsanwaltskammer Köln (61058), and a court-appointed expert in the law of the Federal Republic of Germany and the law of the Slovak Republic. → Full profile
